I was on call with my friend, and we were talking about the scary things that only happen in movies. At first it was about movies with a man with a chainsaw chasing a 16 year old babysitter, or an evil clown that starts to kill on the night of halloween, all the 1990 movies. But then our conversation steered to ghosts and ghouls. I am very superstitious, so when Abby’s mind went to the current ghost stories like the Serbian dancing lady or the crossroads ghost, I freaked out. Her favorite one though is Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary is told to be a girl who died in front of a mirror and goes after those who have killed others. Bloody Mary is one of the stories I know best because Abby always is talking about those types of things. Which made it even more horrifying. I was panicking, so of course as the great friend she is, she walked over to her mirror.
“Bloody Mary… Bloody Mary… Bloody Mary!” Abby repeated into the mirror. “See, nothing happened. I’m fine.”
“Abby! Why would you do that?”
I laughed it off, but in the inside I was horrified. Soon we got off the phone and I climbed into bed. Even though my bed was freshly made with the pillows all fluffed and the blanket tucked in so tight I could barely get under it, I couldn’t bring myself to close my eyes. After an hour of just blankly staring at my ceiling, my eyelids were heavy, too heavy to keep my eyes open. I was forced to fall asleep.
When I woke up the next morning, my hair was all knotted and tangled and my bed was a mess from all the twisting and turning that night. I had nightmares, each one with Abby getting hurt in the end. Without a second thought I grab my phone as fast as I can and quickly call Abby. One ring…two rings… three rings…
“Hello?” Abby exclaims in a soft, tired voice.”It’s 6 AM, what do you need?”
“Hey Abby, just making sure you’re still alive after you did the stupidest thing ever!”
I chatted with Abby for a little bit, relieved she picked up and got ready for school. As the school day went on I slowly started to forget about, well ‘you know who.’ I’m sitting in sixth period just working on finishing my work. Then I hear three little knocks, on what I think was a window. I scan the room looking at each panel of glass carefully, nothing. I turn my head back to my work when I catch a quick glance of something, or someone? I didn’t see it quite clearly, but it looked like a girl. A girl with black hair covering half of her face. I think she was wearing a white nightgown, or was it red? No matter what, I was freaked. I ran out of my classroom as fast as I could. I ran into desks but I didn’t care, people were giving my strange looks but I didn’t care. I ran outside taking that first breath of fresh air. I stumbled my way to the grass and fell down. In confusion I took a few breaths. *Maybe it was my imagination. Maybe it was a reflection of someone in my class. Or maybe it was someone in my class and my brain just twisted the image. *Whatever it was, it sure wasn’t… you know who. I took a few more deep breaths of that clear air and walked back inside.
By the time I got back to my class, the bell had rang and school was over. My belongings were left scattered on my desk from me pushing them as I ran out. I gathered everything together and walked to my car. I look up at my mirror that shows the back seat. I see the girl again. I was a mess trying to get out of that car. Trying to take off my seatbelt and open the car, I probably looked like a maniac. I finally am able to open up my car door and fall to the parking lot ground. At this point I think what every sane person thinks. I am going crazy. Not knowing what to do, I took a breath and climbed back into my car. I rushed home, ignoring the stop signs and I probably ran a stop light too.
I finally reached my house after what it seemed like an hour of driving. I looked at the time and it had only taken me 10 minutes to get home. 5:14. It’s 5:14. Shocked by the time I walk up my stairs leading to the door of my house and grab my keys. Like the movies from the 1980’s I struggle to grab the right key. I look like someone straight out of the Halloween movie. I fumble as I unlock the door rushing inside. I don’t know how I am supposed to live like this. Without hesitation I rush upstairs and sprint into my room. With everything still with me, even with my shoes still on I lock the door and turn on my lights. My thoughts jumbled, my body exhausted, hungry as ever, I lay on my bed thinking of what to do next. I had food in my room, and I had my bathroom attached to my room. With everything I needed that night I took off my shoes and my backpack and quickly took a shower.
By the time I had finally got myself relaxed it was 9:42 and I still hadn’t eaten. Trying to find my food I trip on my backpack and fall to the ground. I look up to see a small mirror laying in front of me with… ‘you know who’ coming for me. Turning around as fast as possible I look around. No one was there. With my jaw on the ground and my body frozen on my sandy coloured carpet, I just stay there, not knowing what to do. Finally letting my legs move I quickly shuffle onto my bed and hide till I feel safe. I got so tired I passed out on my bed.
I woke up to hear knocking on what it sounded like glass. Thinking it was a tree branch knocking on the window, I allowed my eyes to fully open. The lights were off, even though I never turned them off. I looked down to the ground and blood was poured all over. I rub my eyes and it’s gone. Hiding in my bed I closed my eyes till I heard the knocking again, only it was coming from the mirror, with a girl who had black hair covering half her face, wearing a white nightgown with blood stained all over her. My lights were flashing. Lights out.
Bloody Mary.
