Century has a new student-run media program! With the addition of a brand-new multimedia class, core plus teacher Ms. Ashlea Beers wanted to bring video announcements to Century Middle School in the form of a weekly news show.
Every Friday, students tune into KCMS TV for their morning announcements. Two student anchors deliver the “news” program, along with a special video feature that is produced in the 7th or 8th grade multimedia class. The show is recorded and edited Thursday and Friday mornings before school by the multimedia students.
The first news show aired on September 15th. You can find the videos on the KCMS TV YouTube channel. The KCMS news program was started so that students at Century could share news and information about the school in an engaging way, while learning new media skills.
“We had students coming from Tarver and Stellar elementary schools, which both have a daily news show, and they wondered why Century didn’t have their own news show,” explains Beers. “I participated in my high school news show, KLYD TV, and it was my favorite thing about high school. I wanted to give my students that same opportunity.”
In addition to the weekly news program, which Ms. Beers hopes to extend to be a daily production in the future, the KCMS TV YouTube channel has video projects from the multimedia classes. Students in multimedia are currently working on “book trailers” and some students plan to produce a 60 second Horrorfest film to enter into a contest hosted by Student Television Network (STN).
